Orthopaedic rehabilitation

An operation fixes the structure. The weeks that follow decide the function. Evexia Plus provides intensive, consultant-led inpatient rehabilitation after joint replacement, fractures, polytrauma and complex or spinal surgery, for patients who need more than a leaflet of home exercises: daily supervised therapy, pain management, and medical cover on site while they rebuild.

  • Polytrauma
  • Complex post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Spinal surgery rehabilitation

Post-operative joint replacement (hip, knee, shoulder)

Rehabilitation after a hip, knee or shoulder replacement restores range of motion, rebuilds the muscles around the joint, and re-establishes confident, pain-managed movement, while reducing the risk of complications. The intensity of therapy in the early weeks is what determines the long-term result. Our programme combines daily physiotherapy, gait and movement re-education, occupational therapy for daily activities, and hydrotherapy, which is particularly effective for early, low-impact loading of a new joint.

Fractures

Recovery after a fracture, especially a complex or multiple fracture, or one requiring surgical fixation, depends on progressive, supervised rehabilitation that rebuilds strength and mobility while protecting the healing bone. Our team manages pain alongside therapy, restores weight-bearing and gait safely, and uses hydrotherapy and occupational therapy to return patients to independence.

Polytrauma

Polytrauma means multiple serious injuries sustained at once, often combining orthopaedic, neurological and soft-tissue damage. Recovery requires a coordinated multidisciplinary programme with a single physician owning the case from admission to discharge. We bring together physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other therapies as needed, with on-site medical and nursing cover and pain management throughout.

Complex post-surgical rehabilitation

After major or multiple operations, recovery is rarely straightforward. Structured inpatient rehabilitation manages pain, rebuilds strength and mobility, and restores independence, with the on-site medical cover that patients who are not yet ready for community-based therapy require. The programme is designed around each patient's procedures and goals, and coordinated with the surgical team.

Spinal surgery rehabilitation

Recovery after spinal surgery, including decompression, fusion and disc surgery, focuses on safe mobilisation, core and postural strengthening, pain management, and a graded return to activity. We work closely with the operating surgeon and design the programme around the specific procedure, with hydrotherapy and occupational therapy supporting a confident return to daily life.

The Evexia Plus approach

  • A programme designed by a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician for your specific case, coordinated with your surgeon.
  • Daily physiotherapy, occupational therapy, gait and movement re-education, and hydrotherapy in our three-pool complex.
  • Pain management and acute medical care on-site, including 24-hour medical and nursing cover.
  • Psychology support for adjustment, mood and sleep where needed.
  • Indicative length of stay: two to eight weeks, depending on the procedure and goals.

Suitability

We accept patients medically stable enough for active rehabilitation, once cleared by the operating surgeon or treating team. Send a recent medical summary, current medications list and any imaging to us, and our PRM Physician will assess suitability and propose a programme.

Common questions

Which orthopaedic conditions does Evexia rehabilitate?

This page covers post-operative joint replacement (hip, knee and shoulder), fractures, polytrauma, complex post-surgical rehabilitation, and spinal surgery rehabilitation. All are treated under the same consultant-led, multidisciplinary model.

Can post-operative rehabilitation abroad be funded by the HSE?

Yes. Treatment is reimbursable by the HSE under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, with a public-system referral. No medical card or private insurance is required.

How soon after surgery can rehabilitation begin?

Rehabilitation begins once the patient is medically stable and cleared by the operating surgeon or treating team. We coordinate with the referring surgeon so the programme is planned before arrival.

How long is a typical orthopaedic rehabilitation stay?

Indicatively, stays run from two to eight weeks, depending on the procedure, its complexity, and the patient's goals. The length is reviewed with the multidisciplinary team during the admission.

How do I check whether a case is suitable for admission?

Send a recent medical summary, current medications list and any available imaging to our Irish team. Our PRM Physician will assess suitability and propose a programme. You can call our Irish team on 01 263 3051.

The surgery went well. Keep it that way.

Tell us the procedure and the date, and we will outline what a supervised inpatient programme adds over recovering alone at home.
