Multiple sclerosis rehabilitation

MS is a long-term condition, but what it takes away is not lost on a fixed schedule. After a relapse, after a period of progression, or when fatigue has taken over the day, a time-limited block of intensive rehabilitation can reset the baseline. Our MS programme is designed around individual goals, fatigue management, and therapy intensity that routine community care cannot reach.

DAILY THERAPY
At least 3 hours of structured therapy every day
KEY THERAPIES
Physiotherapy for strength, balance, gait and spasticity
Hydrotherapy
Occupational therapy and fatigue management
Neuromodulation (HD-tDCS, Photobiomodulation)
Neurology review for symptom management
HSE STATUS
Reimbursable under the EU Cross-Border Directive, with a public-system referral.

Specialist rehabilitation for multiple sclerosis

In plain language

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the protective sheath around nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. It can affect mobility, balance, vision, sensation, bladder and bowel function, fatigue and cognition, and the pattern of symptoms differs widely between people and over time.

Why specialist rehabilitation matters

After a relapse, after a period of progression, or to set up the management of fatigue and spasticity, an intensive rehabilitation block can re-set baseline function and improve participation in daily life. Many MS patients travel for these blocks because the intensity is hard to access in routine community care.

The Evexia Plus approach

  • Daily physiotherapy targeting strength, balance, gait, and spasticity management.
  • Hydrotherapy in our three-pool complex, particularly effective for MS-related stiffness, fatigue and balance.
  • Occupational therapy for energy conservation, fatigue management, and independence in daily activities.
  • Speech and language therapy where indicated.
  • Neuromodulation (HD-tDCS, Photobiomodulation) used adjunctively where indicated.
  • Psychology support for mood, sleep, and adjustment.
  • Neurology review with our consultant for symptom management alongside therapy.
  • Indicative length of stay: three to six weeks per intensive block.

Suitability

We accept MS patients across the Expanded Disability Status Scale, although intensive admissions are most effective for patients with sufficient stamina to participate in daily therapy. We adapt the schedule for fatigue and we make heavy use of hydrotherapy where heat sensitivity allows.

Questions Irish Families Ask

Common questions about multiple sclerosis rehabilitation

Answers based on Evexia Plus clinical practice and HSE Cross-Border Directive rules.

How the directive works, step by step
01. Is an intensive block worthwhile if MS is progressive?

Yes. Rehabilitation does not change the course of the disease, but it can recover function after a relapse, slow the practical impact of progression, and equip you with fatigue and spasticity strategies that hold their value for months. The consultant will be honest about what a block can achieve in your case.

02. How is fatigue handled during such an intensive programme?

The schedule is built around it: therapy is distributed across the day, rest is planned rather than stolen, and hydrotherapy takes load off the body while it works. Occupational therapists teach energy conservation as a skill to bring home.

03. How often can intensive blocks be repeated?

Many patients return for a block every year or two, timed around relapses or goals. Your Irish GP and neurologist stay in the loop through our discharge letters.

Years on a waiting list is not a plan. A dated admission is.

If MS rehabilitation keeps being postponed, tell us what you need it to achieve. We will say plainly whether an intensive block can deliver it.
